artist survey

Again, I apologize to those of you who are waiting for me to finish your commissions...it seems like there's both nothing and everything going on right now, and I just can't find the time. Hopefully things will settle down soon.

- - -

When did you join DA and why?
Oh, let's see...I joined up on August 23, 2002. Coming up on six years ago! Cool. Um, I don't clearly remember why. Doubtless I was hoping to distance myself from VCL because it only reminded me of all the bad stuff. You know. Anyway, this place seemed nice, so I joined.

What was the first deviation you uploaded?
I have no idea. I put my gallery into storage a couple years ago and everything got deleted...I'm still pretty mad about that, but there was nothing I could do. I can't remember what I first uploaded. In my current gallery, however, the first upload is a piece of giftart for a girl whom I've never heard from again. I hope she liked it. :)

How many deviations have you submitted?
One hundred ninety-nine deviations and sixty-two scraps, for a total of two hundred sixty-one submitted items. Would be more, except for that storage deletion I mentioned above.

Do you submit everything you create?
Not everything, but most everything. I don't do a lot of aimless doodling, unfortunately...most of the time, when I sit down to draw I focus on the finished product and see it through, and then upload. There are a good number of things on my hard drive, though, that have never seen DA.

Do you read all the comments you get?
ABSOLUTELY. I thrive on comments! They're few and far between, and therefore very meaningful.

Do you reply to all the comments you get?
I reply to ninety-five percent of the deviation comments I receive, because they really mean a lot to me.

Do you read all the favourites/watches you get?
Yes, carefully. For each name that has added a fave or a watch, I scroll down and see if that person left a comment. If so, I thank them warmly and look through their gallery; if not, I remove the fave or watch and forget about it. Call me stupid, mean, whatever - I don't care.

Do you prefer comments or faves?
As should be obvious from my last answer, I strongly prefer comments. A fave without a corresponding comment means absolutely nothing to me, and in fact strikes me as a little insulting. Again, I don't care what anyone thinks of me for that, it's just how I feel. I've resorted, on several deviations, to reminding people in bold letters to leave a comment with a favorite, but apparently no one reads descriptions, which really depresses me.

How much time do you spend on Deviantart?
Eh, I check it a couple times a day. Right now my inbox is pretty full so I'll have to take an hour or so to go through all the deviations and comment. And sometimes, if I have nothing better to do, I'll browse randomly, by clicking on my most recent pageview and looking at that guy's favorites and clicking the guy who left the last comment on one of those favorites, and so on. But I don't daily spend much time here. Same for every other internet site I frequent.

Do you think that Deviantart is good for critique?
Yes and no.
I have not the faintest idea. I react to a comment like a beggar on the corner reacts to a dollar bill tossed his way; I don't know what I'd do if I received an honest-to-goodness critique.

Do you think there's a lot of drama on DA?
Beats me. I try very hard to neither start it nor participate in it. I also despise the term "drama" as it is used in this question.

Do you think DA would be better if it filtered out people who are not serious at artwork or are causing too much drama?
"Not serious at artwork" would be a very difficult thing to describe; it's a relative thing, and cannot be judged by strict quality. And as far as I know, people who behave badly are banned, and I believe "causing too much drama" counts as behaving badly.

Do you think the age limit should be higher than 13 for creating an account?
That, again, is a difficult thing. Some thirteen-year-olds are very responsible and serious about art and would make fine members of the community; others are not and would not. It depends very much on the individual. I don't think the limit should go any younger, however.

Do you go on the DA forums?
Nah. I posted there once...no, my page says twice. I don't remember why.

Would you buy a subscription? Why or why not?
Would, will, do, have. It's blatant blackmail, though, demanding money in exchange for benefits without which this place is an absolutely miserable place to navigate. It makes me mad, but then, so do the advertisements and the lack of features without a subscription.

the sad part about me is, i don't comment a lot of the time because at least three people have usually said what i wanted to say, which makes me repetitive and a moot source at best. D:

Hey: I read descriptions. They are the portal to the mind of the artist, ya know? What their motivations were, their inspiration, to whom they dedicate to... How they did it, how long it took. It's all amazing stuff.

I think your first upload.. had a girl and some trees? I don't remember! Augh.

Remember when all of the subscription features were FREE? Ohh I miss those days.

Guess what? I got a fever, and the only prescription is more COWBELL.

I would strongly prefer a repetitive comment, though, even without a fave, to a fave without a comment. The comment at least means that the person took five seconds out of his day to tell me what he liked about the piece, and that means much more to me than the impersonal favorite. :)
