i still hate oberyn by kaleadora i still hate oberyn by kaleadora
EDIT: Due to a tremendous amount of feedback (not here, of course, obviously) telling me that his skin looked greenish (and I still don't understand how it can look greenish if it's in the golden-yellow color spectrum, on the redder side of yellow!), I changed it.

This one took awhile, mostly because I'm no good at drawing horses. But since the scene in A Storm of Swords wherein we first meet this fellow is so beautifully descriptive, I felt he wasn't complete without his improbably-colored stallion. ("a stallion black as sin with a mane and tail the color of fire"....George, what were you thinking?)

Boring Character Number Three: Oberyn Martell, younger brother to the prince of Dorne. He's the jerk everyone wants, the bisexual player who knows everything but only cares about sex and swordplay.

SO many fans of the series absolutely adore Oberyn...but I can't stand him. There's even a "Do me, Oberyn!" LJ group. I really don't know what they see in him. He's boring - not a boring person, but a boring character.

Oberyn Martell, the series A Song of Ice and Fire, and all affiliated stuff belong to George R. R. Martin, the author. Most of his characters are amazing...but not all.

I'll admit Oberyn is pretty cliche, but he came for vengance, mocked everyone, and died. That's not so terrible.

Well, yeah, except that he died stupidly because he couldn't let go of his quest for revenge. I have very little respect for people (or characters in books) who become so obsessed with revenge.

I never said he was the greatest character. He should have just killed Clegane when he had the advantage and the opportunity. But you never really got a chance to learn much about his character. Oberyn had, what, 3 chapters? Though his morbid obsession with revenge was definately...stupid. Especially knowing Gregor.

Actually, I like Dorne and the rest of the Dornish just fine. It's only Oberyn who gets on my nerves. :D

Too right! What is it with the Oberyn love? He gets a vague mention in the last book and suddenly everyone wants to knob him. WTF?

Flame maned horse came out rather well I think.

THANK YOU. My thoughts exactly.

Thanks for the comment! I'm glad you like the horse because I consider myself pretty terrible at drawing horses. :)

Yeh, crack open pretty much any European novel and you can find a character like that.

Still, I really like your rendering of this horse! It may be a bit too deer-like to be realistic, but that adds to the beauty, in a way. Your interpretation combined with Martin's description is wacky-beautiful.

"They came astride red horses and golden ones and a few as pale as snow, all slim and swift, with long necks and narrow beautiful heads. The fabled sand steeds of Dorne were smaller than proper warhorses and could not bear such weight of armor, but it was said that they could run for a day and night and another day, and never tire."

Hence why the horse is slimmer and more deer-like than standard. :) I'm really glad that you noticed, actually, because that's what I was going for!

The ankle hair looks a little unfinished when compared to the other hair. And yeah, yellow is really REALLY tough. When you start making it darker by adding black, it ALWAYS looks green. Stupid yellow. And dang, woman, that shirt is FIERCE. I just met him a day or two ago :D When he mentioned the horse I had to reread it. WHAT?? But you know. Zorse.

Zorse!

I got really sick and tired - within a few hours! - of being told that he didn't look human, so I made his skin plain old brown. Not at all what I imagine it to be, but maybe now the issue can be laid to rest.
